TNB AFA Rebate Drops 78% in April 2026: What It Means for Your Electricity Bill

Your TNB bill is higher this month, and if you're wondering why, especially when  your  usage hasn't changed, the answer is a single line item: AFA, or the Automatic Fuel Adjustment.

TNB has reduced the April 2026 AFA rebate to just 0.47 sen/kWh, down sharply from 2.15 sen/kWh in March. That's a 78% drop in one month, effectively adding 1.68 sen/kWh to your tariff.

For a household consuming 800 kWh, the result is a bill of approximately RM342 instead of RM328 for exactly the same usage.

And according to TNB's own forecasts, rebates are expected to remain near zero through May, June, and July 2026. This is not a temporary adjustment.

What Is AFA and Why Did It Change?

AFA is a monthly mechanism that adjusts your electricity tariff based on the real cost of fuel as well as the MYR/USD exchange rate.

It replaced the previous ICPT (Imbalance Cost Pass-Through) system in July 2025. Unlike ICPT, which adjusted tariffs every six months, AFA recalculates every single month. When fuel costs fall, you receive a rebate and your bill is lower. When fuel costs rise, you pay a surcharge and your bill is higher. You have no control over either outcome.

AFA Rates at a Glance (Recent History)

Month AFA Rate
November 2025 –8.91 sen/kWh (peak rebate)
March 2026 –2.15 sen/kWh
April 2026 –0.47 sen/kWh

April 2026 marks the lowest AFA rebate since the mechanism launched.

Who Does AFA Apply To?

  • Households using more than 600 kWh/month
  • All non-domestic consumers: Businesses, offices, and commercial tenants

TNB AFA Forecast: May, June, and July 2026

TNB's three-month forward projection offers little relief. Rebates are trending toward zero. Bills will remain elevated unless fuel costs fall sharply or the ringgit strengthens significantly against the US dollar.

Month Projected AFA Rebate
May 2026 –0.39 sen/kWh
June 2026 –0.91 sen/kWh
July 2026 –0.08 sen/kWh

How Solar Power Reduces Your AFA Exposure

Solar panels don't remove AFA from your bill, but they can dramatically reduce your exposure to it.

AFA is calculated based on the units you import from the grid. Generate more of your own electricity, and you import less. Import less, and AFA applies to a far smaller number.

Under Malaysia's Solar ATAP programme, homeowners can export surplus solar energy back to the grid and earn export credits. Combined with reduced daytime grid draw, a well-sized system can cut household grid imports significantly though actual savings vary depending on your roof size, orientation, and consumption pattern.

Instead of paying an unpredictable fuel-linked surcharge on 800 kWh, you could be paying it on as little as 80 kWh at the same rate, but a fraction of the financial impact.

GetSolar's Rent-to-Own (RTO) Solar Plan

GetSolar's Rent-to-Own plan makes solar accessible without a large upfront investment:

  • Zero upfront cost
  • Fixed monthly payments — full cost transparency from day one
  • Full ownership at the end of the term
  • System sized to your actual usage and roof

For many homeowners, the fixed monthly RTO payment is lower than what they were previously spending on grid electricity along, meaning your total energy cost can fall from day one, even before accounting for future AFA increases. AFA fluctuations stop being a monthly surprise and become a much smaller charge on a much smaller import bill.

Next Action Steps

April's AFA rebate is near zero. TNB's projections show it staying that way for months. Global fuel prices and exchange rates will only keep moving, and your bill will keep moving with them.

You can't fix global energy markets. But you can reduce how much grid electricity you buy each month.
