How Do Solar PV Systems Work?

GetSolar: Leading the Green Energy Transformation

Solar panels turn sunlight into electricity, it’s that simple. They use something called the photovoltaic effect to generate power, which is then converted by an inverter into energy your home can use.

Things You Might be Wondering Now

We made solar installation an hassle-free process.
Feel free to reach out if you have any inquiry!

Can I still get rebates or incentives under Solar ATAP?

Yes! While NEM Rakyat rebates ended, Solar ATAP may offer new government incentives such as:

  • Tariff offsets for surplus electricity exported to the grid

We guide homeowners on eligibility and claiming rebates during consultation.

Are there system size limits under Solar ATAP?

Yes, but the policy allows larger rooftop systems than NEM did, making it easier to scale for high-usage households. Our team can help design a system optimised for your roof, energy needs, and budget.

Do I need approval to install under Solar ATAP?

Yes, your solar installation must be registered with SEDA. Our team handles all approvals, system registration, and TNB meter adjustments for a fully managed, hassle-free process.

How do I maximise savings under Solar ATAP?

To get the most from your rooftop solar system:

  • Use high-energy appliances during the day when your panels are generating electricity.
  • Consider a smart home or timer-based system to schedule washing machines, water heaters, or air conditioning.
  • Pair with a battery later if needed for evening or night usage (optional).

By optimising daytime usage, you can achieve 20–70% savings on your TNB bill.

Can I still export excess solar energy under Solar ATAP?

Yes, excess energy may be exported to the grid, but it depends on the prevailing regulations from TNB and SEDA. Unlike the old NEM programme, there is no guaranteed 1-to-1 credit.

The main savings today come from self-consumption, meaning the more solar energy you use during the day, the lower your electricity bill. Our team will advise you on the latest export rules during consultation.

What is Solar ATAP?

Solar ATAP (Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme) is Malaysia’s new rooftop solar policy that replaced the Net Energy Metering (NEM) scheme starting 1 January 2026.

Under Solar ATAP:

  • Install solar panels to generate electricity for your home
  • Daytime solar usage reduces your TNB electricity bill
  • Surplus solar energy may be exported to the grid under defined rules, with credits based on prevailing rates

The programme makes rooftop solar more flexible and widely accessible, with larger system limits and no strict quota at launch.

Can I install solar panels on my condominium?

Condominium owners must ensure they have legal rights to the property where the solar PV system will be installed. This may involve obtaining permission from the condominium management or homeowners’ association, particularly since the installation will impact common areas like the rooftop.

What happens to my Rent-to-Own system if I sell my house or move out?

If you sell your home or move out, you have a few options depending on your Rent-to-Own agreement:

  • Transfer agreement to the new homeowner (subject to their consent and eligibility)
  • Pay off the remaining balance to own the system outright
  • Request a relocation (subject to technical and cost assessments)

Please contact our team early in your moving process so we can advise you on the best approach.

What is the GetSolar Rent-to-Own guarantee?

Our Rent-To-Own (RTO) model is fully serviced. Under our guarantee, we cover all repairs, maintenance, and warranties over your contract period.

On top of this, we provide a performance guarantee. If your system generates less than the guaranteed energy due to unforeseen circumstances (like unusual dips in sunlight), we will investigate, rectify, and pay for the shortfall.

A 100% fuss-free system with no out-of-pocket costs.

Is my rooftop suitable for a solar panel installation?

In sunny Malaysia, most rooftops are a great match for solar panels. However, if your roof is very steep or has a complex design with multiple angles or dormer windows, panel placement can be trickier and may add some extra costs.

It’s always a good idea to have our GetSolar pros take a look to ensure feasibility. Simply reach out to us on WhatsApp or our solar calculator for a consultation.

Will my solar panels work at night and on cloudy days?

Solar panels convert sunlight into energy, so even on cloudy days, your system will generate 40–80% of its usual output. At night, the inverter powers off automatically, and your home draws electricity from the grid to keep everything running smoothly.

Can I install solar panels on my HDB / Condo / MCST property?

Condominium owners must ensure they have legal rights to the property where the solar PV system will be installed. This may involve obtaining permission from the condominium management or homeowners’ association, particularly since the installation will impact common areas like the rooftop.
