Ahmad Faris has been watching his TNB bill climb for years. With three air-conditioners running throughout the day, a home-based business adding to the load, and a family of five in a Shah Alam terrace house, his household regularly consumed over 900 kWh per month, landing him a RM 520 bill every single month.

He'd been considering solar panel installation in Malaysia for two years. But like many homeowners, he hesitated due to upfront costs feeling daunting, the TNB application process seemed complicated, and he wasn't fully convinced the savings on his electricity bill would be worth it.

A neighbour's recommendation brought him to GetSolar. He reached out for aquote, and was guided to use GetSolar's free solar calculator for a quick pre-assessment of his roof and potential savings.

How The Solar System Was Designed For This Home

A site visit was arranged within three working days. Ahmad had everything explained clearly, roof orientation, shading patterns, his 12-months bill history so he understood exactly what the system would do and why it was sized the way it was.

The recommendation: a 10 kWp grid-tied system with 22 monocrystalline panels and a 10 kW inverter with live monitoring, registered under TNB's NEM Rakyat scheme.

Total system cost: RM 26,800, inclusive of installation, NEM application support, and a 10-year workmanship warranty.

Rather than committing to a large upfront payment, Ahmad opted for GetSolar's 10-year Rent-to-Own (RTO) plan, spreading the cost into manageable monthly payments while still benefiting from bills savings on his first day.

The TNB paperwork was handled entirely by GetSolar. Approval came through in six weeks and installation took two days.

The Results: RM 384 Less On His Electricity Bill Every Month

Twelve months after system commissioning, Ahmad's system had generated approximately 14,890 kWh of solar energy. Around 62% was consumed directly by the household;  the remaining 38% was exported to the grid as NEM credits.

Solar Savings Table
Before Solar After Solar
Monthly TNB Bill RM 520 RM 136
Monthly Savings RM 384
Annual Savings RM 4,608

That's  RM 4,608 in savings over the first year — ahead of  GetSolar's original projection of 68–72%.

"I honestly did not think the savings would be this big in the first year. I wish I had done this sooner." — Mr. Ahmad Faris

What Does The Long-Term Financial Picture Look Like?

At RM 4,600 in annual savings against a RM 26,800 system cost, the estimated payback period is 5.8 years. The panels carry a 25-year performance warranty, meaning Ahmad is looking at roughly 19 years of significantly reduced electricity bills after reaching breakeven.

Assuming a conservative 2.5% annual tariff escalation, total savings over 25 years are projected at between RM 89,000 to RM 103,000.

Before going solar, his electricity bill was one of his biggest fixed monthly expenses. Now, it's no longer something he worries about each month.

What Stood Out In Ahmad's Experience

Four things made the difference for Ahmad:

Honest advice: The system size was based on his actual consumption profile, notmaximum roof capacity. He was shown multiple options with clear payback projections and no pressure.

Zero paperwork: GetSolar managed the entire NEM application,  the single biggest barrier that had held Ahmad back for two years.

Clean, fast installation: The system was installed professionally and completed within two days.

Ongoing support: When an inverter alert appeared in the third month via the GetSolar Connect app, it was diagnosed remotely and resolved within 48 hours.

Is Solar Worth It in Malaysia?

If your monthly TNB bill is above RM 300, a properly sized system will typically pay itself back within 5–7 years. Malaysia's high solar irradiance and the government’s push for renewable energy through the latest Solar ATAP scheme make the case for solar stronger now than it has ever been. As a Selangor homeowner, Ahmad also qualifies for Cukai Pintu rebates that can further reduce his annual council tax.

Every year of delay is another year of paying full-price electricity.

"I was sure my electricity bills were only going to keep rising. Now  I see RM 384 less every month, and I've told everyneighbours I have to just do it."
