EV Charging Cost Calculator:
TNB vs Solar

Most people assume 27 sen a unit. Once your EV lands on top of your household usage, the real number is far higher — and it climbs every time you cross a TNB threshold. See yours in under a minute.

Roughly 664 kWh a month. TNB charges on total household usage, so your EV is billed on top of everything else.
This is the single biggest lever on the solar side. Solar only fills your car directly while the sun is up; anything you draw after dark comes off the grid first.
What's behind the numbers
  • Tariff. TNB's current domestic tariff: energy at 27.03 sen/kWh up to 1,500 kWh a month and 37.03 sen/kWh above it — applied to your whole usage, not just the units above the line — plus capacity 4.55 sen, network 12.85 sen, AFA 3.59 sen and RM10 retail above 600 kWh, the Energy Efficiency Incentive rebate up to 1,000 kWh, KWTBB above 300 kWh and 8% service tax on usage above 600 kWh.
  • Consumption. Real-world figures for Malaysian driving, typically 10–15% above the official WLTP rating.
  • Generation. 78.6 kWh per kWp per month, calibrated against a real GetSolar customer's system rather than the industry rule of thumb.
  • Solar cost. Enough extra panels to generate what the car draws at home, priced at RM4,500/kWp over a 25-year life — about 19 sen per unit generated. Units charged in daylight cost that and nothing else. Units charged after dark are exported first and bought back, so they also carry the gap between the 27.03 sen export credit and your own marginal import rate.
  • Solar ATAP. Exported units are credited at the 27.03 sen energy rate, capped at the energy-charge line of that month's bill, and unused credit doesn't carry to the next month.
  • Scope. These figures cover the car only, so they can sit on top of whatever your house already uses. What solar does to the rest of your bill is a separate question — the main GetSolar calculator handles that one.
  • Charging. Every figure assumes you charge at home, through a wall box, with 10% AC charging losses between the meter and the battery.

An estimate, not a quote. Roof orientation, shading, actual driving style and your real usage pattern all move the number.

Why your EV costs more than 27 sen a unit

TNB doesn't bill your car separately. It bills your house, and where your total monthly usage lands decides the rate on every unit you've used.

That's what makes an EV different from any other appliance you've added. A 1,250 km month needs somewhere around 215 kWh at the wall — enough to push a mid-sized household through one or two thresholds at once:

ThresholdWhat happens when you cross it
600 kWhThe RM10 retail charge, AFA and 8% service tax all start applying
1,000 kWhThe Energy Efficiency Incentive rebate disappears completely
1,500 kWhYour energy rate jumps from 27.03 to 37.03 sen — on every unit, not just the ones above the line

Cross the 1,500 kWh line and your car isn't just paying for its own units; it's re-pricing your entire household bill. The calculator above shows this as the effective sen/kWh your charging actually costs, which for most homes lands between 50 and 80 sen — and past a ringgit a unit for anyone the car tips over the 1,500 kWh line.

Sizing

How much solar does an EV need?

Roughly 1 kWp of rooftop solar covers about 450 km of driving a month. Sized for the car alone, on top of whatever your household already uses:

Monthly drivingEnergy at the wallExtra solar neededRoughly
600 km~105 kWh1.4 kWp2–3 panels
1,250 km~220 kWh2.8 kWp4–5 panels
2,000 km~355 kWh4.5 kWp7–8 panels
3,000 km~530 kWh6.8 kWp11 panels

Based on 620W panels and 16 kWh/100 km. Most homes add this to a system sized for the house itself, which is why the calculator prices the extra capacity separately rather than quoting a whole new system.

Charge Your EV From Your Own Roof

Rent-to-Own from RM0 upfront, or buy outright from RM21,000. Either way, the units your car draws in daylight cost about 19 sen instead of the 50-80 sen TNB charges.

1. Rent-to-Own, RM0 upfront

From RM248/month on the 10-year plan, or RM158/month over 5 years with a down payment. Free maintenance and a performance guarantee included.

2. Claim up to RM3,000 back

SuRIA Home returns RM600 per kWac installed, paid to your TNB-registered account. First 50,000 households, closing 31 December 2026.

3. Sized for your car and your home

Roughly 1 kWp covers 450 km of driving a month. We size the extra capacity your EV needs on top of what the house already uses.
