Factors Affecting Solar Panel Prices in Singapore

Location

Singapore benefits from plentiful sunshine year-round, making it an ideal location for solar energy. However, shading from nearby buildings or trees can influence the performance of your solar panels. In such cases, additional equipment or system adjustments may be necessary to ensure optimal energy generation, potentially increasing installation costs.

Type of solar panel

The cost of your solar panel installation is significantly influenced by the type of panels you choose, and solar panels can be classified based on their underlying technology and brand. The three main types of solar panel technologies are monocrystalline, polycrystalline, and thin film. Each offers unique advantages and comes at different price points, so selecting a solution that best aligns with your energy goals and budget is crucial

Roof type and material

Solar panels are compatible with nearly all roof types. However, specific roof types and materials may require additional components, such as specialised racking and mounting systems, to ensure a secure and efficient installation. This can subsequently increase the cost of your solar panel installation.

Roof angle

Steeply pitched roofs can add both time and complexity to the installation process, as extra care is needed to ensure each solar panel is safely and securely mounted. These installations often demand additional manpower and specialised safety measures, which may lead to increased labour costs.

Do solar panels come with a warranty?

Yes, solar panels in Singapore typically come with two types of warranties – product warranty and performance warranty. Product warranties last 10-25 years on average, while performance warranties last about 25 years.

These warranties typically cover 1-to-1 replacements of physically defective equipment. However, labour costs associated with the replacement work are often chargeable.

Are there subsidies for solar panels in Singapore?

No direct cash subsidies or rebates are currently offered to homeowners for installing solar panels in Singapore. Instead, a solar net metering scheme compenstates them for the excess energy they generate, encouraging solar adoption.

The main schemes available for homeowners are the Simplified Credit Treatment (SCT) scheme and the Enhanced Central Intermediary Scheme (ECIS).

  • Simplified Credit Treatment (SCT): Only applicable to homeowners buying from SP Services, this scheme pays for surplus solar energy at the prevailing SP Group electricity tariff minus grid charges (typically about 20-25% of the tariff). This means homeowners receive roughly 75-80% of the retail electricity rate for each kWh exported.
  • Enhanced Central Intermediary Scheme (ECIS): Applicable to homeowners (and businesses) buying from OEM retailers (with systems under 10 MWac), this scheme allows homeowners to sell excess at the average wholesale market price via SP Group.
Is it worth getting solar panels?

Give Singapore's abundant sunshine, supportive government schemes, and the long-term financial and environmental benefits, solar panels are generally a worthwhile investment, especially for landed property owners. While the upfront cost may be significant depending on your chosen plan, the long-term savings, increased property value, and contribution to sustainability make solar panels an attractive option for many Singaporean homeowners.
