Refine your estimate (optional) — occupancy & tariff type
This affects how much of your solar generation you use directly (self-consumption) versus export — homes occupied during the day self-consume more, which is where most of the savings come from.
Assumptions used in this calculator
• Based on TNB's current Domestic Tariff (General, or Time-of-Use if selected above): 44.43 sen/kWh up to 1,500 kWh/month, 54.43 sen/kWh above (General); ToU splits this into peak/off-peak rates.
• RM10 retail charge above 600 kWh/month, waived at or below.
• Energy Efficiency Incentive (EEI) rebate applied on a sliding scale up to 1,000 kWh/month — TNB hasn't published the exact table, so this is a market-estimated approximation.
• 1.6% KWTBB renewable energy fund charge above 300 kWh/month; 8% service tax on consumption above 600 kWh/month.
• Solar generation estimated at ~78.6 kWh/kWp/month, calibrated against a real GetSolar quote rather than a generic industry rule of thumb — actual output varies with roof orientation, shading, and season. Self-consumption share depends on your occupancy pattern above; excess exported to the grid is credited under Solar ATAP at RM0.2703/kWh, capped at the energy-charge portion of your after-solar bill (it can't credit more than that line item) — meaningfully less than self-consumed solar, and unused credits don't roll over month to month.
• Direct purchase cost estimated at RM4,500/kWp installed, in line with GetSolar's published pricing.

Figures are estimates for illustration only, based on TNB's current Domestic (General) Tariff for Peninsular Malaysia and typical Malaysian solar generation assumptions. The Energy Efficiency Incentive schedule is a market approximation, as TNB has not published exact figures. Sabah (SESB) and Sarawak (SESCO) use different tariffs and are not covered here. Always confirm against your latest TNB bill and a site-specific solar quote before making a decision.

How does TNB calculate your electricity bill?

Every TNB Domestic Tariff bill is made up of the same building blocks, whether or not you have solar. Understanding them is the first step to understanding where solar actually saves you money.

ChargeRate
Energy + capacity + network44.43 sen/kWh up to 1,500 kWh/month, 54.43 sen/kWh above
Retail chargeRM10/month, waived at 600 kWh or below
AFA (fuel cost adjustment)Changes monthly — can be a surcharge or a discount
Energy Efficiency Incentive (EEI)Rebate on a sliding scale up to 1,000 kWh/month
KWTBB (renewable energy fund)1.6% above 300 kWh/month
Service tax (SST)8% on consumption above 600 kWh/month

This is exactly the tariff structure the calculator above uses — including the parts most basic calculators skip, like KWTBB and SST — so the “before” number you see matches your real TNB bill as closely as an estimate can.

How much can solar really save you on your TNB bill?

Two things drive your savings: how much of your usage happens while your panels are generating (self-consumption), and how your system size compares to your actual usage. Under Malaysia’s Solar ATAP programme — which replaced NEM on 1 January 2026 — electricity you use directly from your own panels avoids TNB’s full retail rate, which is where most of the savings come from. Power you export to the grid is credited at a lower rate (RM0.2703/kWh, capped at the energy-charge portion of your bill), and unused credits don’t roll over month to month.

In practice, this means a system sized close to your actual usage — not the biggest one that fits your roof — tends to deliver the best return. That’s why the calculator above flags it when your selected system generates meaningfully more than your household uses.

Rent-to-Own vs Direct Purchase: which is right for you?

There’s no universally “better” option — it comes down to how much upfront cash you want to put in versus how quickly you want full ownership:

  • Rent-to-Own (10-year) — from RM0 upfront, fixed monthly payments, maintenance included throughout, ownership transfers to you at the end of the term.
  • Rent-to-Own (5-year) — roughly 50% down payment, lower total cost than the 10-year plan since less is financed, ownership sooner.
  • Direct Purchase — full ownership from day one, no monthly repayment, but a larger upfront cost and maintenance billed per visit (RM300–800).

The calculator above lets you flip between all three views using the numbers from your own bill, so you can see which one actually fits your situation rather than guessing.

How much do solar panels cost in Singapore in 2026?

A typical landed-home solar system in Singapore costs from S$20,000 outright for a small-roof setup (around 40m²), scaling to S$30,000–S$40,000 for medium and large roofs (75–125m²). Prefer no upfront cost? Our Rent-to-Own plan starts from S$210/month with S$0 upfront. Get a personalised quote in 60 seconds with our solar calculator.

Can I install solar panels with zero upfront cost?

Yes. GetSolar offers a 10-year Rent-to-Own plan from S$210/month with S$0 upfront — typically lower than your current SP Group bill, and the system becomes yours at the end of the term. We also offer a 5-year RTO (from S$160/month, ~50% down) and outright purchase from S$20,000. See which option saves you more →

How much can I save on my electricity bill with solar?

Most Singapore landed-home owners save S$240–S$775 per month on their SP Group bill, depending on roof size: small roofs (40m²) save ~S$240/month, medium (75m²) ~S$460/month, and large (125m²) ~S$775/month. Panels are warrantied for 25+ years of generation. Calculate your exact monthly savings.

How long does solar panel installation take in Singapore?

From contract to commissioning, expect 8–12 weeks: 2–4 weeks for site survey, design, and EMA/SP Group licensing paperwork, then 1–2 days on-site for the physical install. We handle all permits, net-metering registration, and grid-connection approvals on your behalf.

Do I need approval to install solar panels on my landed home or condo?

Landed homes generally don't need URA approval but require EMA licensing and SP Group net-metering registration — we manage both. Condos and strata properties need MCST approval first; see our condo & MCST solar guide for the approval playbook.

How much do solar panels cost in Singapore in 2026?

A typical landed-home solar system in Singapore costs S$13,000-S$18,000 for a 6-8 kWP setup, which suits most 4-bedroom homes. Larger roofs (10 kWP+) range from S$20,000-S$28,000. Your exact figure depends on roof size, panel brand, and whether you add a battery. Get a personalised quote in 60 seconds with our solar calculator.

How much can I save on my electricity bill with solar?

Absolutely! Given Singapore’s rising electricity prices, solar panels are a smart move to cut down on those expensive bills while helping save the planet.

The amount of savings you can enjoy will largely depend on 3 factors:

  • Your energy consumption patterns
  • Your existing electricity retailer and utility rate
  • The number of solar panels that your roof can accommodate

Plus, thanks to Singapore’s energy export structure, you can also earn from selling extra power back to the grid. You’re looking at a payback period of 5-8 years for a system that will last you over 25 years. A pretty solid investment, if you ask us.
